10 Favourite Movies.

with 60 comments

Being a movie buff & being surrounded by movie buffs,
I think this entry is totally necessary!
In fact, Buttons & me got into quite a debate
when we’re coming up with this following list.
It got us totally excited and orgasmic as well.
It’s true – good movies can really bring you to a new high.

I know there will probably be a lot of debate and ideas coming up from you,
especially if you’re a movie buff yourself!
So if you’ve got other movies not mentioned here and
you think everyone should watch them before they die,
please do us a favour and share!

That’s why, here is a list of my

TOP TEN FAVOURITE MOVIES!

ONE

closer

In no particular order, I’d first like to introduce CLOSER.
Starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman,
this show has probably already won half the battle with its impressive cast.
This movie is believable, accurate and
probably a little too harsh showcasing how fucked up
adults, relationship and sex can turn out to be.

I love the intensity of the show and particularly the dialogues.

TWO

silenceofthelamb

SILENCE OF THE LAMB needs no introduction.
Total pure classic.
All it takes is one cold stare from the intelligent and psychotic
Dr. Hannibal Lecter to send chills down your spine.
I always liked thrillers and particularly this one,
because it’s really god damn sick.

THREE

ghost

Oh! I love GHOST by Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.
I’ve watched it around three times & I adore everything
from Unchained Melody to Demi Moore‘s short crop in that show.
It left me at the edge of my chair
feeling angry & heartbroken all at the same time.

I’m sure everyone would know that classic scene at the pottery wheel.
This one is a must watch!

FOUR

amelie

AMELIE is my favourite girl.
Enchanted, whimsical & unimaginably amusing.
She seeks solitude and loves it.
I love the cinematography of this movie and
how little details are always brought to the viewers’ attention.
It taught me how to appreciate small things in life.
How I wish I can see the world through Amelie’s eyes!

I can still remember the scene when Amelie asked herself –
“How many people are having an orgasm in Paris right now?”
And she can randomly decide on “Fifteen”.

My favourite quote from the movie?
“You’ll never be a vegetable – even artichokes have hearts.”

FIVE

butterflyeffect

Yet another nervewrecking, mind effing movie.
Buttons & I totally agreed that this movie has got to be in the top ten!
Firstly, there’s Ashton Kutcher in it.
Secondly, I totally love “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis.
And even if those two reasons are invalid,
the plot of this show has got to be rated as TOTALLY AWESOME.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT – what a perfect name for this movie.

SIX

independenceday

I remember watching this movie when I was still a kid.
The scene with the dog escaping the fire in the tunnel is truly memorable.
I haven’t watched this one in a long time though.
But from what I could gather (based on my memories of the show),
this movie is totally fantastic!
Will Smith rocked.
And if I remember correctly,
the actor who was the US President was quite cute too.

SEVEN

horsdeprix

HORS DE PRIX, also known as Priceless.
I caught this show in the theatre twice when it was being screened.
Again by one of my favourite actress, Audrey Tautou.
I just cannot take my eyes off Irene (played by Audrey) in this movie.
It’s the love story between a gold digger and a poor waiter.
But some twists came along & made this one a really adorable film!

EIGHT

sunrise sunset

BEFORE SUNRISE is about two strangers spending a night in Vienna.
The affinity between them is almost magical but yet very convincing.
The movie doesn’t boast of a lot of action or whatsoever,
just packed with intriguing and interesting conversations.

The sequel, BEFORE SUNSET is shot 9 years after the first movie.
1995 & 2004.
In the movie, it was exactly 9 years apart as well.
So you can really see Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy aging a little.
I love the song “Let Me Sing You A Waltz” in this one.
Love it!

NINE

blooddiamond

Leonardo Dicaprio‘s acting was totally awesome in this.
Period.

TEN

bourneidentity

Who doesn’t love the whole espionage-gone-wrong,
‘the corporation is turned against you’ idea?
I think somehow Singaporeans loved this one for the
whole anti-establishment, sanitised and removed ‘agency’ in it.

Besides, Matt Damon was real beefed up for the film as well.
Yummy.

Sorry that I ain’t no Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter fan.
There are really too many shows that I adore!
Actually I’m one big sucker for chick flicks too.
Bring It On. Sex And The City. Devil Wears Prada. Mean Girls.

I TOTALLY LOVE THEM!

I didn’t include any Chinese shows as well – WAY TOO MANY to mention!

Here are other shows I think I should watch before I die too.
I better get down to watching them soon!

Memento
Talented Mr Ripley
Reservoir Dogs
Trainspotting
Godfather

Okay, time for Kill Bill!

  1. hi, i think u should try to watch “Crash” and “Wanted”, these are pretty good shows too. the former makes you think (somewhat like “Butterfly effect”) while the latter is good for the action. :)

    • Haven’t watched Crash before but heard about it.
Wanted is the one by Angelina Jolie right? I like how she spread her legs right before
James McAvoy at the car chase scene.

James McAvoy is the one in The Last King of Scotland too.
      That film kicks ass too!

  2. Please please watch Talented Mr Ripley, Godfather and City of God if you hadn’t.

Closer was such a… bare portrayal of me, in my quest for truth. it actually hurts watching it.

Memento I wanna watch! I downloaded it and hadn’t got the time to watch it.

    Schindler’s list?

I dunno why, a simple piece like Serendipity makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

Shawshank Redemption is classic and Sliding Doors.. is something I thought you might like.

Gee, I m like imposing my cinematic preferences on u haha. pardon me.

City of God I’ve watched before. ROCKS. A bit upsetting though.
Schindler’s List I LOVE IT TOO. Yet another depressing movie though.
I love the theme song in Schindler’s List by composer John Williams. Button’s fave too!

Serendipity & Shawshank Redemption watched before.
Shawshank Redemption is simply too brilliant lah. hahaha.
Sliding Doors I’ve never watched before.
Will try to see what it’s about and watch it if I can.
And I like your cinematic preferances btw. :p

  4. shld watch The Truman show starring Jim Carrey.

omg, like imagine ur own life right from the moment u were born,u are filmed by hidden cameras. The people around u are actors and actresses. But u have no idea that its one big reality show about yourself.

unless one day u discovered and try to break free.

  9. hmm, i did this with my friends sometime back, and it was so hard for everyone to list their all time top ten movies. way too many good films to just shortlist them this way apparently! too many genres as well. :p

you should probably try these too, if you haven’t caught these already:
    1. garden state
    2. the science of sleep (the same director, michel gondry shot eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. and yes, you need to get over your personal agenda against jim carrey and watch that movie too! it’s beautiful!)
    3. the diving bell and the butterfly
    4. paris je’taime
    5. playtime (jacques tati!)
    6. summer storm

    joanne

    August 23, 2009 at 3:44 pm

    • wah your list of movies freaking cheem. i’ve only caught paris jetaime before. but i didn’t really like it leh. i like how it’s made up of a compilation of many short stories though. 1 or 2 was alright but i think i fell asleep on some. :p
the others never heard of them before. haha. cheem-ness!
      i’ll check them out. thanks!!

  10. Just to share, one movie which leave a deep impression is “BABEL” (2006) starring brad pitt. The movie focuses on four interrelated sets of situations and characters, and many events are revealed out of sequence. I’m not good at explaining but i feel it’s somehow like “crash”. It’s just the sort of movie that makes me think :)

    anon

    August 23, 2009 at 4:57 pm

  12. Hey Peggy! You have to check out this book.

    http://www.librarything.com/work/1667046

It’s called 501 must see movies listing it in different genres. I read it and was flipping through for any great films I’ve missed out. Anyway, that aside, I love this entry since I’m a movie buff myself. So anyway, here’s my own personal list of must watch, not in any particular order.

    1. Little Miss Sunshine
    2. Juno
    3. Million Dollar Baby
    4. Thank you for smoking
    5. Forrest Gump
    6. The Green Mile
    7. Se7en (By Brad Pitt, one of the best thrillers I’ve watch)
    8. Hotel Rwanda
    9. Love Actually
    10. Bridget Jones Diary
    11. The Pursuit of Happyness. (You have to catch this! Will Smith’s must watch movie, and definitely very inspiring.)
    12. Big Fish

I’m quite a sucker for British romantic comedies and anything with Hugh Grant in it as well. There’s just so much movies I’ve missed out but the above are the more memorable ones I’ve remembered.

    Jen

    August 23, 2009 at 5:25 pm

    • hey jen, buttons got that book. i’ve browsed through it couple times. always go toilet pang sai will bring that book. HAHAHAHA!

my friend kept telling me Big Fish is very nice also. The cover just don’t attract me at all. i think i’ll check it out soon. :p the rest, i’ve pretty much watched everything. little miss sunshine is good. especially like the morbid how they put the dead grandparent in the boot of the car. hahaha.

      se7en is cool too.

  15. Before Sunrise & Before Sunset is a must see imo. A rather talk-ish kinda film, not all peeps will like it. The movie gives a very undescrible kind of REAL feel that totally captured your imaginations. Also, the concept of having met that someone randomly, develop a relationship, and the atrociously ridiculous romantic idea of falling in love and leaving it all behind when the sun rises…a must watch for those yearning for love.

    123

    August 23, 2009 at 7:26 pm

    • i agree. the connection is totally magical!
it gives people too much hope though, especially those going on europe trips alone soon, don’t watch. there aren’t too many ethan hawkes to go around. haha.
but it’s really beautiful. i love how they manage to not exchange numbers but arranged to meet at the train station few months later. do people do that in real life?! it’ll totally kill me! haha.

  16. I’m with you on Butterfly Effects, Amelie & Blood Diamonds.
You got me excited too! Haha :)

There’s this movie “Rendition”, you’ve gotta catch it. It’s really good and probably underrated.

    I also like:
    Slumdog Millionaire
    Click
    Moulin Rouge
    Pearl Habour
    Knowing
    Saw I (2 – 4 not fantastic)
    Catch me if you can
    The Sixth Sense

I heard that UP’s really good, haven’t got the chance to catch it yet. And also, this Japanese movie about makeup artist for the dead, “Departue” which i didn’t get to watch too.

Sliding Doors abit like The Butterfly Effect I think, something like how your life will change if one thing was done differently.

    Emily

    August 23, 2009 at 8:18 pm

    • I didn’t watch Rendition. Heard about it before though.
Woo I like Moulin Rouge also, how can I forget! Catch Me if You Can was brilliant too. I never got down to finishing Sixth Sense because I already know the twist because of some spoiler friends. HAHAHA.
I heard about Departure. Wanted to catch it with Buttons. It was still screening earlier this year right? I’ll rent the DVD! I saw the DVD out for rent at the DVD station near my house! :)

  17. we have similar liking for movies :)) i like 8 out of the 10 u listed; the last 2 in your list weren’t my type of movies.

i like the followings for their witty dialogues and happy endings :))
    1) you’ve got mail (the choice of songs in this movie are so apt for its story)
    2) notting hill (the songs in this movie also make the movie wonderful)
    3) love actually (wonderful selection of songs & love how they pieced different love stories together)
    4) bridget dairy’s diary (the 1st movie)
    5) four weddings and a funeral
    6) when sally met harry
    7) music and lyrics (hugh grant & drew barrymore)
    8) the holidays (jude law, cameron diaz & kate winslet)

i’m a sucker for good romantic comedy!!!

some other fav from other movie genres include:
    1) shall we dance (richard gere, susan sarandon & j.lo)
    2) notebook
    3) moulin rouge
    4) don’t say a word
    5) sliding doors
    6) great expectation
    7) mrs henderson presents (judi dench & bob hoskins; dialogues were so witty and hilarious)

i’ve lost count the no. of times i have watched all the above listed movies *hide* HAHAHA!

and just like u… i have a personal prejudice against jim carey! LOL!

  18. i just re-watched closer the other day (i think last saturday) when channel 5 was re-running it on tv. and it was really as good as the first time i watched it. brilliant i’d say.

i LOOOOOOOVVVVE butterfly effect too; left me mind-blown and it’s really a show i never grow tired of watching. which ending did you see? i’ve seen 2 endings to this movie and one of them was pretty disappointing, imo.

have you watched eternal sunshine of the spotless mind? i think it leaves quite about the same effect as butterfly effect.

    August 23, 2009 at 10:04 pm

    • i think the one (CLOSER) on TV was heavily censored right?
the part where clive owen was sprouting all the vulgurities at julia roberts should be all gone?
i didn’t watch it on tv. my friend suggested that they might all be censored, so i was just wondering. :p
hehehe. i love the last part when jane jones smith went home to USA. i was like (o_O)!

      haha.

i’ve only caught one ending of the butterfly effect endings leh.
the one where he chose not to meet the girl when they were still kids.
      what’s the other one?

i’ve never watched eternal sunshine of the spotless mind before.
will watch it! SOONER OR LATER! hehehehe.
      thanks for the comment.

      August 23, 2009 at 10:21 pm

    • i’m replying to myself because i can’t reply you, lol.

yeah, it was quite censored because there were some scenes that doesn’t quite link up, but doesn’t matter because i’ve caught it on the big screen before.

i’ve bought the dvd for butterfly effect and the alternate ending was that he went back to the womb and strangled himself to death with the umbilical cord. it was also known from previous scenes in the show that he has “brothers” prior to his birth, but the foetus were all dead due to strangling of the umbilical cord.
      i didn’t like this one.

there’s jim carrey in eternal sunshine btw.
one of those show where i feel he’s brought out the un-comical side of him.
      i like him leh. lol!

  26. Hey pegs, you may want to catch Love me if you dare. It’s a french movie by one of my favorite actresses, Marion Cotillard. It tops my movie list now (maybe until time traveller’s wife is out). Do watch it! pretty sure you’ll like it! :D
