All women have PMS? Not true!

with 2 comments

In this Whisper post, I’m going to share some of the common myths and facts about menstruation.
Our periods is something we cannot get rid of (not until you get your menopause, at least) and
probably will need to learn to live with for the next couple years or decades.

In ancient Rome, Pliny the Elder wrote about how bees left hives,
mares miscarried and corns in the field wither at the touch of a menstruating woman.
Some religions consider menstruating women to be unclean and impure.
These are just a few more serious kind of myths that we might have heard of.
Being modern women, I think it is only right that we should learn and know more about our bodies.
Learning more about the period can also make us wiser and
teach us how to not let our periods affect our daily lives!

Here are some of the common misconception and myths you might have heard about menstruation:

1. Menstrual cycles should always be 28 days.
The menstrual cycles vary from woman to woman, 28 days is only an average.

2. Women are always moody, bitchy and irrational during menstruation.
How not true! These characteristics described above,
also known as PMS, are not experienced by all women.
One cannot explain all women’s moods by blaming it on the period.
Women are just as capable whether it is “that time of the month” or not.

3. Menstrual blood is toxic and “unclean”.
The next time someone squirm at the sight of menstrual blood because they think it’s “toxic”, slap him/her.
Menstrual blood is no more unclean than any other blood!

4. Doing *fill in anything* will shorten or delay a period.
Eating particular foods, exercising, fasting, bathing,
skipping rope or any other thing you do will NOT lengthen or shorten a period.
If you cannot change it, why not change the way you view it?
Embrace the days even when you’re having your period!

5. You should not eat certain foods (eg. meat, dairy) while menstruating.
You are allowed to eat whatever you want when you are having your period.
There are no rules or limitations at all.
In fact, some vitamins can help ease pain for some – so eat more meat for iron and milk for calcium!

6. All women have terrible periods.
Most women find that the discomfort is minimal and does not stop them from regular activities they enjoy.
Some women do have more pain or symptoms then others.

7. You should not exercise while menstruating.
Menstruation is not a disability. And you can do anything you want during your period!

I hope you have learnt a thing or two more about our bodies and about periods.
Have a happy period and never stop loving your own body!

  1. I would have to disagree with Point no.7, cause much as we women would like to do anything during our periods.

I think women shouldnt actually attempt to go swimming during their menstration? We dont want to be caught swimming in a “Red” Sea. =P

  2. 5. You should not eat certain foods (eg. meat, dairy) while menstruating.

Hmm.. some can’t consume cold food/drinks cause it actually cause the menstrual cramps to be more painful. (Personal experience. =S)
